She watched entranced as they twirled up and down like tiny helicopters, singing their exquisite ‘Good morning’ to the world. No need for a speaking spell to understand what these exuberant little birds were telling her: ‘Hello, world! Such a beautiful day – so nice to be up and about before anyone else!’

She touched down beside the Big Top in record time. It was only five thirty and the blinds were still tightly drawn in the caravan. She parked her broomstick and the bat-nav, and crept silently through the damp grass to the front of Star’s crate. Mercifully, he was fast asleep, so she sat and watched him fondly for a minute or two.

‘Star,’ she whispered. ‘Wake up, and no barking.’

He had been dreaming that he was curled up under Mildred’s bed with Tabby, so he was overjoyed to find that she was really there. He managed to restrain himself from barking, and Mildred unbolted the crate and let him out for a silent cuddle that went on for ages. At last she put him down, with a finger to her lips, then she untethered the pony and led him round to the seal’s crate.
